Question: Tell us something personal about yourself. Your family life? Schools you went to? Favorite movies? Favorite TV shows and books? Recreational activities and hobbies?

Answer: I am 51 years old. I was born in Marysville. My dad retired from the Air Force. He became a high school drama teacher. My mother was a housewife but she was also very creative. She liked to do batik which is a form of art using different dyes and wax and ironing. In high school I discovered rock and roll and that was my focus was music. My favorite movies are Little Big Man, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I just read Leather Neck. I like playing music. I play drums.

Question: I met you at Chalk it Up Sacramento, how long have you been going to this event?

Answer: That was my second year doing that.

Question: What are your thoughts about Chalk it Up Sacramento? Do you feel it’s a good way for the community to appreciate and understand artwork?

Answer: I think it is absolutely. It gives the community an opportunity to participate. They leave chalk all around for the kids and others to participate. The kids get a sense of what is possible.

Question: You do CD artwork? Can you explain to the readers what CD artwork is?

Answer: CD artwork is recycled cds and dvds that I turn into works of art. They come in all shapes and they are meant to be hung up and the sun play with light off of them.

Question: How did you get into CD artwork?

Answer: I saw a commercial and in the background was a fish made out of cds. I had a bunch of those AOL cds and so I just made cd art. My dad was going through cancer treatment and I was helping out my mom and so I stayed around her a lot and was turning my energy into creativity.

Question: Where do you find all of the CDs to make this artwork?

Answer: My sister is a teacher and she has access to a surplus to make artwork for her kids, I use those. A lot of people donate cds to me.

Question: What other kind of art do you do?

Answer: I started doing some painting. I am a novice at it. My roommate has been doing abstracts for years and he is amazing and he inspires me to do something of my own. I am just trying to grasp the concept of paint and brush right now.

Question: Since I am a paranormal investigator, have you had any paranormal experiences?

Answer: I had a UFO experience in Carmichael about thirty years ago. I was driving down fair oaks boulevard on Christmas eve for a celebration to my friends house and I saw these lights going from east to west on Fair Oaks boulevard which looked like a very low altitude. I was very close to my friends house and as I got out there was about five lights that looked further away that flew up and were in a circle. We called the airports to see if there was any reports. Executive airport confirmed that there was something in the sky but they could not give us any more information. After about an hour and a half, one by one they started to trail to the south. They just took off and faded away. There was five or six other people that witnessed it as well. I thought maybe it was Christmas so that’s what attracted their attention was the lights on that day. Maybe they thought there was a war because of all the different colored lights.

I had another experience in my studio about fourteen years ago. I was emotionally upset and depressed. I had loud deafening music on. I felt fingers on my back very deliberately grabbing my fingers like all over my shoulder. I thought because the music was so loud that it was my friend Steve telling me to turn the music off, I turned around and said, “Steve!” but he wasn’t there. So, I yelled at the entity to leave and opened the door and lit some incense and it left.

Question: What is your spirituality?

Answer: I am not religiously affiliated. I was a deacon in a Presbyterian Church in high school. I am not a Christian or a catholic. I believe in goodness, treating people how they want to be treated. I try to move forward always.

Question: Thank you for this fun interview, now to some fun questions. If you had 6 dinner guests, 3 historical, 3 fictional, who would they be?

Answer: The historical guests would be Da Vinci, Beethoven, Shakespeare. The fictional would be Jack the Ripper, The classic Dracula, Santa Claus.

Question: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 survival items would you bring?

Answer: unlimited supply of food and water, and non stop music.

Question: How can people contact you?

Facebook: Mattscdart

Question: Before we close, do you have any words of wisdom for your readers?

Answer: “Don’t get in your own way” by Mary J. Blige
